session four: Establishing Significance

"Significance" is a simple method of assessing and constructing the historical significance of an object - the method is an long established one - but it has been carefully communicated in a training pack put together by the Heritage Collections Council of Australia - and can be down loaded in full as a PDF from AMOL.

This week you will need to develop a statement of significance for your two case study objects.

These statements will form the basis of the text on the posters and will help you to form the key points for discussion and research in your case studies. Each statement needs to be roughly 150-250 words and it needs to :
  • Introduce the artefact
  • contextualize the artifact
  • make claims of it's significance (eg: cultural, social, technological, economic, intellectual, sentimental, material, utilitarian, ephemeral value)
  • It needs to discuss it's origin
Esssentially these statements set the scene for your case studies.

You are to post your statements on the blog with an image and the MOV registration number if you have it. spend some time reading eachothers statements and leave comments.
