Object 2: Pram and Wicker Pram

Ref. Numbers: K558 and K557

The wicker pram features a wicker basket area where the child would be seated, it shows intricate wicker and wood work. Most of the pram appears to be wood, including the wheels and main structure of the pram. This aspect can relate to the time when it was made and the craftsmanship of that time, giving it technological and social importance.

Prams can hold a lot of personal meaning for they carried new born babies and young children in their early stages of life. Begin so intricately made can also suggest the social importance of the pram. Having great craftsmanship may indicate wealth of the family and the specific purpose of the pram, to be seen in public wheeling it containing your new born child. The pram may have been connected to semi religious events such as the Sunday walks through the city.

The second pram, in better condition, is equally as intricate but a slightly different style, the back wheels larger than the front and the basket are shallow and solid walled.
